Skincare 101

If you are overwhelmed by the skincare aisle, completely new to the skincare world, or just need some refreshers on skincare, I created this page for you. Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated!

Skincare 101

Figure out your skin type so you know what YOUR skin needs; not what your favorite influencer says you need or the cute packaging that catches your eye. When we aren’t 100% sure what our skin needs or what our skin goals are, we tend to over-purchase or waste time/money on things that won’t move the needle.

How to figure out your skin type: Wash your face, wait 30-60 minutes and evaluate how your skin feels. If your skin is…

  • Shiny, slick & feels greasy, you have oily skin
  • Tight, rough, or flaky, you have dry skin
  • Oily in the t-zone (forehead, nose, chin), but normal everywhere else, you have combination skin
  • Balanced (neither dry nor oily), you have normal skin
  • Stinging, itching, or red, you have sensitive skin

Knowing your skin type will help you figure out what type of products to reach for. Whether you reach for a lightweight gel-moisturizer (geared towards oily skin types) or a richer, creamier formula (geared towards dry skin), you will be able to better choose products that work for your unique skin.

Figure out your own personal skin goals: Do you want to fade hyperpigmentation and dark spots, decrease the look of large pores, soften fine lines & wrinkles? The list goes on. Figure out what goals you have for YOUR skin so you can intentionally choose products for your personal routine.

Last but not least

Remember the basics of skincare & add from there: If you are creating a skincare routine from scratch, the basics you need in your routine are a cleanser, a moisturizer, and a daily SPF (applied in the AM). Once you solidify these three products and use them consistently, you can then add in a targeted treatment serum. Your targeted treatment serum will be based upon your skin type & your personal skin goals as I laid out above. As you continue building consistency with your skincare routine, you can continue adding different serums and/or exfoliating acids, etc. as you please.

Start small. Stay consistent. Keep your routine simple.
