Becoming the De-Influencer: How to Shop Your Own Stash & Stop Over-Consuming

Let me put it to you plainly. I love to try and buy and see what works & what doesn’t. If you’ve been around here for any period of time, I am sure you already know that. BUT, over the months of tailoring my own routine, both skincare/makeup & health/wellness, I have learned the power of saying ‘no’ to myself. Everywhere I look, there are products being pushed. I don’t want this space to be another one of those. I want this space to be educational, share hypothetical routines, share my own routines, talk about products I truly love (I am not affiliated with any links I add), talk about things I have learned or am currently learning in the beauty world, & maybe some motherhood sprinkled in here and there.

I want to be clear: I never want anyone to feel like they need my exact routine to experience healthy skin or to master the natural makeup look. I want my posts to simply encourage you to explore your own stash & utilize my knowledge/experience and tailor it to your own skin’s needs. Sure if there is a product/s you think your skin could benefit from, by all means go for it! I just don’t want this space to feel like another outlet pushing you to over-consume.

Let me de-influence you

Somewhere in my childhood, I became a lover of beauty. I loved to put my grandma’s makeup on and slew her necklaces around my neck and pretend to be an adult. My love for all of it started then and continued to grow as I grew up.

I noticed though, as I hit middle school and other’s around me were starting to dabble in the realm of makeup, I felt like I needed to too. Sure, I had the desire, but in middle school, I wasn’t quite ready to jump into it as part of my daily routine just yet.

But I was influenced. I remember wanting blue eye-shadow because that’s what everyone else was doing who had blue eyes like me. Funny looking back on that now.. that is not a good look, but I did it anyway.

This continued as I got older.

There is a balance though; there have been several products I have loved that I learned about from a friend or quite honestly, an influencer. But you have to have discernment. Before you purchase something, ask yourself these questions to make sure it is something that will actually benefit you & your own skin goals.

  • Is this person recommending these products in the same age range as me? In a similar life-stage as me? Share the same skin-type as me?
  • Has this person actually tried the product or is it most likely just to make money through an affiliate link? (Nothing wrong with that btw, but make sure the product actually has some credibility)
  • Do we share similar skin goals? Sometimes what someone else is trying to correct, is not the same issue you are trying to correct. Not every product is a one-size-fits-all.

These questions have helped me to make the right decision whether or not to buy something. I absolutely love recommending products to friends, and on here obviously, but I do like to mention beforehand what my skin type is or what I am utilizing the product for. There are so many products that are alluring in what they claim to do, but I don’t typically need what the product is offering. Be mindful of what your skin actually needs & go from there.

Overconsumption is everywhere

I feel overwhelmed anytime I hop on social media or even walk amongst the beauty aisles at the store. Over-consumption is so real these days. The world tells us we need more, more, more. And it is so easy to fall into that trap!

I see health & wellness tips everywhere, too. It isn’t just in the beauty world; it is also in the health and fitness world, fashion world, motherhood, etc. I have worked to strip my wellness routine down to more of the basics and even that has made a difference in my overall health. I haven’t felt any differently NOT taking certain supplements, so why not save some $$ and consume less.

I no longer workout 6-7 days a week (yea I know, that is a lot). I used to prioritize HIIT (high intensity interval training) and little did I know, it was wreaking havoc on my body. I was doing too much, too often. HIIT is great when it is limited; everything in moderation. But instead, these days I am focusing on 3 (maybe 4 on a good week) strength training days & prioritizing low-intensity walks whenever I get a free morning or evening to do so. I’ve seen my body change more than I ever did in the past, while doing less. Even though, everywhere I look on the media, I see supplements I should be taking, movement I should be doing, and of course the skincare/beauty routines I need to be implementing in order to succeed in XYZ.

It just isn’t true.

I am learning to de-influence myself & am bringing ya’ll along with me in the journey.

Check your stash first

Chances are, you could probably create a skincare and makeup routine that is just right, with things you already have. Check your stash and see what you have, what is missing that you would like to add, and go from there. Maybe you don’t have to buy an entirely new routine; maybe you just need to add a product or two to have a well-rounded am/pm routine or makeup routine.

I used to think I needed the exact brand or vitamin C or whatever serum or makeup product it was that I was seeing everywhere, but let me de-influence you again. You don’t need that exact product she has to achieve healthy skin or that perfectly imperfect makeup look. Is she correct about needing a vitamin C in your routine? I’d say most likely, yes. But you can use whatever brand you prefer or already have & still achieve the same results. It is so easy to see someone else’s full routine & their beautiful skin behind it and think you need every product on her counter. Believe me, I am still tempted to research her entire routine to see if I should buy it too. But emphasis on the RESEARCH. This is where I am now as a recovering skincare junkie; I take the time to do research first before I am tempted to buy something. Chances are, I realize it would not benefit me, I am already using something doing the same thing, or there is zero credibility behind what she is using.

I plan to deep-dive into more of the education behind products I use/recommend, to provide that credibility behind the things I am loving. There are ingredients that matter and do obviously make a difference in your skin. Those kinds of products are what I am loving to learn about these days. Not the trendy things, but the tried & true, most researched ingredients that do the heavy lifting.

Let’s make beauty fun again- not stressful, overwhelming or adding pressure to the idea that we need more of this and more of that to embrace our beauty. The simpler, the better.
