How to Choose the Right Exfoliating Acid for Your Skin Concern

My favorite nights of the week are the nights I get to exfoliate. Choosing the right exfoliating acid for your skin type and concerns can feel overwhelming, though. I feel like a lot of people shy away from exfoliating their skin because the word “acid” sounds intimidating. That’s how I used to feel before I knew what they were all about. Exfoliating acids are a powerful addition to almost any skincare routine. They help unclog pores, fade hyperpigmentation, brighten dull skin, smooth uneven texture, and promote a healthier-looking complexion overall.

This guide will help you understand the differences between exfoliating acids so you can confidently choose the one that’s right for your skin. Acids aren’t scary at all once you figure out which is best for you & learn how to properly use them.

Concern: Fine lines, sun damage, and dullness

Acid to look for: Glycolic Acid (AHA)

This acid is the strongest of the AHA family. You can find glycolic acid products in liquid form, toning pads, or serums, as many of the other exfoliants. Glycolic acid penetrates the deepest, helping brighten skin & increase collagen production.

Concern: Dryness and mild hyperpigmentation

Acid to look for: Lactic Acid (AHA)

Lactic Acid is a bit more gentle as well as hydrating. Lactic Acid can help bring moisture back into the skin while exfoliating the dead skin cells. Thus, correcting dryness and helping to fade dark spots.

Concern: Acne, Sensitive Skin, Darker Skin Tones

Acid to look for: Mandelic Acid (AHA)

Mandelic Acid is one of my favorite acids I’ve used because it is non-irritating and it offers anti-bacterial benefits. I often reach for this acid when my skin is breaking out, usually around the time of the month. This acid is great for brightening the skin as well.

Concern: Oily, Acne-Prone Skin, and Blackheads

Acid to look for: Salicylic Acid (BHA)

Salicylic Acid is the best choice for acne-prone skin because it is oil-soluble, meaning it can go deep into the pores to clear congestion. Using this acid regularly is a great way to stop breakouts before they start.

Concern: Rosacea, Sensitive Skin, Eczema

Acid to look for: Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA)

PHA is my other favorite acid to use. This acid is the most gentle of all the exfoliating acids. It adds hydration back into the skin barrier, has zero extra sun sensitivity, and it exfoliates the surface of the skin.

How to incorporate exfoliating acids into your routine

Once you’ve identified the exfoliating acid that’s best for your skin, introduce it gradually into your routine. Start by using it 1–2 times per week, only in the evening (PM). Avoid layering it with other active ingredients—such as vitamin C, retinol, or other exfoliating acids—to avoid the risk of irritation.

Because exfoliating acids can increase sun sensitivity, it’s especially important to wear a SPF every morning.

As your skin builds tolerance, you can increase to 2–3 times per week. It is generally not recommended by most to exfoliate your skin more than this amount, unless you’re using one of the more gentle exfoliants. For example, I can use my Mandelic Acid serum every other night because 1.) it is very gentle overall and 2.) I have been cycling through acids for several years now, so I have built a tolerance to them. Whenever I am regularly using my PHA toner (the most gentle acid of them all), I am able to use it every night without irritation. *I would still start slowly with any acid you choose (even the gentle one’s) if you are new to exfoliants*

Exfoliating acids can make a huge difference in your skin’s texture, tone, and overall appearance, making them a great addition for anyone’s routine. Below, I’ve rounded up some of the exfoliating acids I have tried to get you started:

  • Naturium Mandelic Topical Acid 12%– Very gentle exfoliating serum. I have never experienced any irritation or stinging from this product. This would be a great place to start if you have sensitive skin or are just beginning to use exfoliating acids.
  • Naturium BHA Liquid Exfoliant 2%– This exfoliant is a liquid and feels very gentle on the skin as well. I like to apply this using a cotton pad. Great for acne-prone skin or anyone looking to decongest clogged pores.
  • Barefaced Toning Pads I– These feel quite gentle as well, but if you are new to exfoliating acids, I would start slow with these. These include multiple acids such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, and salicylic acid.
  • Medik8 Press & Glow PHA Toner– The most gentle of the acids I have tried. I can use this toner everyday and not experience any irritation or dryness. Perfect for extra sensitive skin, beginners, or anyone who would like to incorporate an exfoliant into their routine more than 2-3x/week.
  • Medik8 Sleep Glycolic Treatment– I like this product, but I will say, upon application there is always a bit of stinging. I wouldn’t recommend this one to beginners or those with dry, sensitive skin or active acne.
  • DRMTLGY Tingl Exfoliating Pads (2% BHA + 10% AHA)– This is my least favorite exfoliating product I have tried. Tingle is in the name, but it tingles/stings for a VERY long time. I do notice an immediate difference in the texture/tone of my skin after using this one, but I can’t get past how uncomfortable my skin feels initially.

I hope this guide helps you find the perfect exfoliant for your specific skin goals. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me via email if you have any questions! I would love to hear from you.

Happy Exfoliating!
