How Motherhood Changes Your Skin (& What You Can Do About It)

Motherhood is an ever-changing journey. It brings such joy and precious moments—but it also comes with sleepless nights, hormonal shifts, and the daily demands of caring for little ones. While these changes are completely normal, they can take a noticeable toll on your skin.

From acne and hyperpigmentation, to dryness, sensitivity, inflammation, dullness, and loss of elasticity, the physical changes of motherhood often show up on our skin. But instead of dwelling on the challenges that accompany each stage of motherhood, let’s focus on what we can do to nourish and support our skin.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

If there’s one place to start, it’s hydration.

Supporting your skin from the inside out is one of the simplest and most effective ways to promote healthy skin. If drinking enough water has become a challenge like it has for me, make it something you actually enjoy. Get a cutie water bottle you love and add ingredients that make it tasty—electrolytes, fresh lemon or lime juice, cucumber slices, or even fresh berries.

One of my favorite electrolyte powders right now is the Just Ingredients Raspberry Lemonade Electrolytes. It’s SO refreshing and genuinely tastes like raspberry lemonade without all the excess sugar. If you prefer a DIY option, you can easily make your own electrolyte drink with ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen. There are so many simple ways to make hydration both enjoyable and taste good.

Hydration doesn’t stop with what you drink—it also means supporting your skin barrier with the right skincare. Look for products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, hydrating facial oils, and nourishing toners. These ingredients help replenish moisture, strengthen the skin barrier, and restore a healthy glow.

Your skin is much more equipped to handle the hormonal and lifestyle changes that come with all the seasons of motherhood when your barrier is well hydrated, both internally and externally.

Affordable options (that I have tried & love):

  • Timeless Skincare Hyaluronic Acid 100% Pure: This is pure hyaluronic acid. I absolutely love this product when I need some added hydration. You only need 3-4 drops to cover your entire face, so a little goes a long way.
  • Timeless Skincare Squalane Oil 100% Pure: This facial oil helps seal in moisture, while also being anti-bacterial. This is such a great facial oil for acne-prone girlies (like myself). It is a dry oil, so it leaves a glow without looking oily. I love to add this into my moisturizer to give an extra boost of hydration.
  • BYOMA Hydrating Milky Toner: This is a milky toner just like the name suggests. It contains so many hydrating ingredients in it such as glycerin, panthenol, beta-glucan, and ceramides. I love applying this by doing a few shakes into my palm and pressing it into my skin. This toner legitimately feels like a drink of water for my skin; it keeps it feeling hydrated all day long.
  • Purito Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cream: This is currently the only Korean skincare product I have in my rotation. This is such a good moisturizer when your skin is feeling dull and dry. It contains panthenol to deeply hydrate and repair a damaged skin barrier.

Gentle Exfoliation

Because postpartum skin and hormonal fluctuations can lead to clogged pores, dullness, dark spots, and melasma, incorporating an exfoliant into your routine can help target these common concerns. Chemical exfoliants use gentle acids to dissolve dead skin cells, unclog pores, encourage healthy cell turnover, brighten the skin, and gradually fade hyperpigmentation for smoother, brighter skin.

Tips for introducing an exfoliating acid if you’re new to acids:

  • Start slow. Apply your exfoliating acid 1–2 nights per week as part of your evening skincare routine.
  • Avoid combining with other strong actives. Don’t use exfoliating acids in the same routine as ingredients like vitamin C or retinol, as this can increase the risk of irritation.
  • Wear sunscreen daily. Exfoliating acids can make your skin more sensitive to UV exposure, so applying SPF every morning is essential.
  • Choose the right acid for your skin. Different exfoliating acids target different concerns, so selecting one that works for your skin type and goals is key. If you’re unsure where to start, check out my blog post  How to Choose the Right Exfoliating Acid for Your Skin Concern, where I break down the different types of exfoliating acids and who they’re best suited for.

Affordable options (that I have tried & love):

  • Naturium Mandelic Topical Acid 12%: This includes mandelic acid, niacinamide, and other fruit AHAs to exfoliate the skin gently.
  • Barefaced Toning Pads: These pads are newer to my routine, but I have really been enjoying them. They include several acids such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, and mandelic acid. These are the toning pads I, which are gentle enough for daily use. This product is more expensive as a whole, but the way I use them so infrequently than the brand suggests, they last me a long time, so I still wanted to include these in the list.
  • Medik8 Press & Glow PHA Tonic: This exfoliant is one of the most gentle exfoliating acids due to the acid used. This toner uses PHA that gently exfoliates AND hydrates the skin’s surface at the same time.

Prioritize Sun Protection

The most overlooked product in any skincare routine is sunscreen—but it’s also the most important. Daily SPF is the single most effective thing you can do to protect and maintain healthy skin. Everyone should be wearing a facial sunscreen every day, but it’s especially important for postpartum moms and mothers in general (because whose kids don’t want to be outside 24/7?!).

If you’re dealing with hyperpigmentation or melasma, SPF is truly your best friend. Consistent daily sun protection helps prevent existing dark spots from becoming darker and reduces the formation of new discoloration.

My biggest recommendation is to find a facial SPF you genuinely enjoy wearing. When you love it, you’re much more likely to apply it every morning—and consistency is what makes the biggest difference.

Affordable options (that I have tried & love):

  • Trader Joe’s Daily Facial Mineral Sunscreen: This leaves your skin feeling so silky and smooth after applying & slightly matte. For people with more oily skin, this is a great option.
  • Skin1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum: This was the first Korean sunscreen I tried and I fell in love with it immediately. It feels like a lightweight moisturizer, rather than a sunscreen. It is also a chemical SPF, so I want to make note of that. Other than that aspect, it is such an incredible sunscreen for all skin types.
  • Naturium Dew-Glow Moisturizer SPF: This product also uses chemical sunscreen filters, so if you prefer chemical over mineral, this product is fantastic as both your moisturizer and your protection. It feels incredibly silky on the skin & keeps the skin moisturized all day long. (I have not tried Naturium’s Dew-Glow Mineral SPF/Moisturizer, but they do offer one now!).
  • EltaMD UV Clear: This is my top choice for a facial SPF, but it is not the most affordable on the market, so I am adding it last. If there is one thing I have splurged on, it is my daily SPF. Once I found this, I have been consistently applying it every morning without question. I love it so much because it feels like skincare, not sunscreen. I am able to apply the recommended amount & not feel like it is too heavy, oily, or thick.

Love the skin you’re in

At the end of the day, loving the skin you’re in isn’t about chasing perfection—it’s about caring for yourself intentionally. By protecting your skin with the right active ingredients, you can better embrace each precious, messy, tiring, and joy-filled moment of motherhood.
