How Busy Mom’s Can Maintain Healthy, Glowy skin

I used to think skincare had to be complicated, but I’ve learned it’s actually much simpler than we’re often led to believe. Healthy skin comes down to consistency and choosing the right ingredients. At the end of the day, your skin doesn’t recognize a brand name—it responds to what’s inside the bottle.

For years, I chased the latest products and spent far too much money trying to achieve “perfect” skin. What I discovered is that more isn’t always better. Loading your skin with unnecessary products and ingredients can do more harm than good, and expensive doesn’t automatically mean effective. It wasn’t until I simplified my routine and learned what MY skin needs, that I started seeing real results in my skin. These days, I focus on key ingredients rather than trendy brands, and my simplified AM and PM routines have saved me both time and money. As a stay-at-home mom, I love my moments of self-care, but I also don’t have 30 minutes to spend in the bathroom every morning and night. If you’re passionate about taking care of yourself without sacrificing precious time with your little ones, you’re in the right place.

Skincare should be enjoyable, not overwhelming. Let’s embrace the beauty of keeping it simple.

Skincare basics

There are three products that deserve a permanent place in your skincare routine once you reach your 20s: a vitamin C serum, a retinoid, and a daily facial SPF.

Vitamin C plays a key role in brightening the skin, supporting collagen production, and protecting against environmental stressors. It also works alongside your daily SPF to help neutralize free radicals caused by sun exposure. My skin tends to be sensitive to pure l-ascorbic acid (vitamin c), so I opt for serums that contain vitamin c derivatives such as these below:

  • Naturium Vitamin C Complex Serum: This contains l-ascorbic acid, but also a vitamin c derivative, making this serum okay for my reactive skin.
  • Remedy Skin 15% Vitamin C Complex Brightening Serum: This is a great milky serum. It doesn’t leave a sticky residue like many vitamin c serums do. This product contains 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid for brightening the skin.
  • Biossance Vitamin C Rose Oil: This product is a facial oil, but it sinks in really quickly while still leaving your skin with a healthy glow. I love this facial oil; especially in the winter time. It contains Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate for brightening the skin.

At night, the focus shifts to supporting your skin’s natural repair process. A retinoid is considered the gold standard for increasing cell turnover, stimulating collagen production, and helping to keep pores clear. The key is finding one your skin can tolerate consistently, as regular use delivers the best results over time. If you cannot tolerate a retinoid, you are not alone. I have gone back and forth wondering if I can or cannot tolerate retinoids. Sometimes I feel like I have great success with one, and then several months later find that my skin is more sensitive/reactive and/or breaking out more than usual. Granted, retinoids do increase cell-turnover as stated above, which can sometimes cause purging (forcing underlying congestion to the surface). I have a hard time pushing through the purging phase, so I will typically stop using the product and opt for a more gentle formula that doesn’t cause my skin to purge. There has been more and more research coming out showing that peptides are great additions to an anti-aging skincare routine, as some people have opted to use them rather than retinoids for a gentler approach to anti-aging.

The one retinol product I have used and keep coming back to is:

  • Naturium Retinol Complex Serum: This serum contains encapsulated retinol, a natural bio-retinol and bakuchiol (a plant-derived retinol), therefore being extremely gentle for even the most reactive skin. I have never had any issues with irritation or purging with this serum. I continuously come back to this product when I want to include a retinol in my skincare routine.

I am currently trying out the Timeless Skin Care Coenzyme Q10 Serum as a retinol alternative- I will report back!

Last but not least: your daily facial SPF. This one is a non-negotiable. While the sunshine is lovely, unprotected sun exposure is one of the leading causes of premature skin aging. Wearing SPF every day helps protect your skin from UV damage, dark spots, fine lines, and the list goes on. If you’re a mama like me, you know just how much time we spend outside—making your daily SPF an absolute must.

My all-time favorite daily facial SPF is the EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 (tinted or non-tinted, I use and love both). It feels like skincare, rather than a sunscreen. I love the texture and finish of it, which definitely helps me apply it daily. Find a formula you actually LIKE & you will find yourself reaching for it more consistently!

Additional products to round out your routine

Start and end your day with a gentle cleanser. I personally like to double cleanse in the evening to make sure all makeup & sunscreen is off, but that step is optional. Washing your face in the morning is optional as well, though I enjoy starting the day fresh before applying my skincare.

My current favorite gentle cleansers are as follows:

  • Bioderma Sensibio Micellar Water: I use this on a cotton round as my first cleanse in the PM before I hop in the shower to do my second cleanse. This micellar water is so gentle and it literally gets all my spf and makeup off my face!
  • CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser: I have used this for years and have always loved it. It does not strip my skin, gets the residual spf, makeup, and grime off & it leaves my skin feeling hydrated. This is something tried and true for me personally, I cannot find another cleanser that I like more than this one! It is also affordable- I don’t know about you, but I don’t like spending a lot of money on a facial cleanser!! This is the cleanser I use as my second cleanse after the micellar water.
  • Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser: Another tried and true for me. This stays on my bathroom counter, so I use this in the AM. It is the most gentle cleanser that soothes, hydrates, and leaves it feeling clean, not dry.

After cleansing in the morning—or at the very least, rinsing your face with water—apply your vitamin C serum, followed by a moisturizer. I cycle through so many different moisturizers because to be honest, I haven’t found one that has become a tried and true for me yet, so use whichever moisturizer works best for you! If your daily SPF provides enough hydration for your skin, it can double as your moisturizer. Just like that, your morning routine is complete with only three products.

In the evening, cleanse your skin, apply your retinoid/anti-aging serum of choice, and follow with a moisturizer. That’s all you need for a simple, streamlined skincare routine that supports healthy, radiant skin.

You should not feel pressured to buy the latest, most expensive products on the market to achieve healthy skin. My goal here is to educate on ingredients, offer affordable alternatives, and show you how to streamline your routine to fit your real life. All Mama’s deserve to feel beautiful and confident in their own skin without sacrificing time or money.
